I tried following this article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Date_display_format about getting Thunderbird showing the dates in the Date column consistently for today's messages too, but I cannot find the column in the advanced settings to modify it. It is really annoying to have no proper timestamps for todays messages. Is there an official way to fix it?

I don't understand what you mean by "the column in the advanced settings".

The article you linked discusses using the config editor to change a setting. Not sure what column you seem to think you need to see.

But you might be able to ignore all that using an add-on, such as:
