I save some e-mails in folders and then some of these folders are empty after a month or so. Can you help?

I have some folders set up to keep certain e-mails. Not all e-mails but some I want to save for what ever reason. After a month or two have gone by I have the need to retrieve a certain e-mail. Alas, the folder is empty. Is there any way to retrieve these e-mails?
