I have got into 256 colors somehow and can't get back to normal. Refresh works but only temporarily. When I restart Firefox it is back in 256 colors. I've tried with add-on disabled but no joy. I can't find anywhere to untick the 256 color box which I must have clicked.

Try the "Compatibility" tab of the shortcut you use to start Firefox. Either:

  • Right-click a desktop shortcut, then click Properties
  • Right-click a Firefox icon pinned to the Taskbar then right-click Mozilla Firefox, then click Properties

You should clear all the boxes on the Compatibility tab for best results:

I have never seen settings for that inside of Firefox, but IMO it is related to the video drivers you are using. That is where I have always found color density settings such as that.

Right-click the Windows Desktop and then open Properties or Screen Resolution. Then look for Advanced Settings (or something like that and look for Monitor & Colors.

The exact location for that type of setting will vary depending upon the video software that is installed.

My settings are still set to "highest" . I'm sure I saw a box for "256 colors" in Firefox somewhere and I inadvertently clicked it. Everything is Ok when I'm not using Firefox.

Thanks for the suggestion.
