My bookmarks and folders are all out of order. How can I restore them to look exactly how they were in the previous verion of Firefox?

All my bookmarks and folders are not in the same order as they were before. And, to even get to all of my bookmarks, I have to go through several steps. I would love to be able to easily access my bookmarks in the order that they were before the update and just as easily (w/o having to click bookmarks and click "show all bookmarks").

Thank you.

There is a "real" bookmarks menu button for the toolbar. You can add it from Customize, or use the "Library" button as described in the article linked below:

Regarding bookmarks being out of order, that is concerning. Does there seem to be any pattern to what has happened?

What I understand is want to reorder them. To what you had, no sorry. But if do Open Bookmarks --> Show All Bookmarks --> Views You get a bunch of options to get them some what near some semblance of order.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Well, the problem is that I dont exactly remember the order by memory. So i cant restore how it was.

Also, before, I just had to click the bookmark button once and all my bookmarks and folder will be displayed. If i wanted to go to a folder, I just hover over it and the contents will be displayed without me clicking on the folder. It was much simplier.

Now, i have to go to multiple steps and clicks just to get to bookmarks in a certain folder.

So, there's no simple way to restore this?

I added the underlined star, but all the bookmarks toolbar FOLDERS are GONE. I've always used Xmarks/LastPass and so my bookmark SET is stored in the Xmarks SERVER and I can see them all there.

I TRIED restoring from Xmarks Tools and Xmarks reports 'done', but nothing appears in FIrefox. Both Chrome and Safari display them correctly.

It looks as though Mozilla is doing its darndest to move us OFF Firefox - without my bookmarks, it's unusable to me.

I've tried dragging tabs to the toolbar and that doesn't seem to work any longer. What the heck DOES FF 57 do?????

Hi Paul Hubert, you should still be able to add bookmarks to the toolbar by dragging and dropping the tab.

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Mac: Hold down the option/Alt key when starting Firefox. Windows: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

There is some problem with the Xmarks extension recently, but I have not been following those threads. Possibly it has not been updated or debugged for Firefox 57.

Is "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" still on the Bookmarks Toolbar?

Make sure toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible. Open the Customize window and set what toolbars (Show/Hide Toolbars) and toolbar items to display.

  • Right-click empty toolbar area -> Customize
  • "3-bar" menu button -> Customize
  • View -> Toolbars
    *you can tap the Alt key or press the F10 key to show the hidden Menu Bar temporarily
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.

The dragging DOES work. I will have to assume "user error" on my part. Thanks for the suggestions, though.
