Over two hundred messages waiting but will only download one at a time
I received a message from an ebay seller requesting feedback. Then they seem to keep coming and coming. The same message, same time and date stamp. If I go into gmail directly I don't see them though. At the moment there are 171 waiting to come down but the number keeps growing. The ebay seller seems baffled about and again, I'm not seeing them in gmail, not in spam or anywhere. When I click "get messages" in Thunderbird it only brings one of the duplicates down at the time. Meanwhile I have to go into gmail to get my real emails. Please help!

Sounds like a log jam. access webmail account via a browser. Delete the offending email which keeps repeatedly downloading. Empty the 'Spam' folder.
Well log jam sounds very accurate. Today the count is up to 247. Yesterday Thunderbird was downloading one message every time I clicked "get messages". Even though it did that the count total never dropped any. Today it is not downloading any. It says no new message to download yet it gives the count of 247. Meanwhile I am getting new real e-mails and Thunderbird is not downloading them. I have to go to Gmail on the web to get them.
As I mentioned earlier these messages are nowhere to be found on the web on Gmail. Nowhere.
I appreciate your help! I'm at a loss right now.
Correction. It is back to downloading a single offending message every time I click get messages, but the total still does not reduce at all. "Real" emails are not coming.
Is this an imap or pop mail account?
Delete the offending message, if imap, confirm it is placed in the gmail trash/bin.
Move all good emails into another folder. when Inbox is empty..... right click on Inbox (assuming that is where the bad, now deleted email was located) select 'Compact'
Empty Junk if pop or Spam if imap folder. Right click on 'Junk' or 'Spam' and select 'Compact' Empty the Trash.
