I just sent an e mail and 10.7 MB of pictures; it took a few minutes but I expected that. I then got another dialogue box, which stayed for another few minutes saying "sending login information mean"? What does that mean please?

It means Thunderbird is sending your log in information to your mail provider so it can send the mail your requested. Given the huge size of your email, your anti virus was probably spending the usual extended time scanning for a virus it could not find, because it already claimed your system to be virus free.
