Thunderbird continuously repeating email downloads (e.g. currently downloading 23959 of 18794 in Important)

iMac High Sierra 10.3.3 I recently had to reformat my hard drive and clean install my software. On reloading Thunderbird everything seems to work normally with the iMap server except that Thunderbird is continuously repeating downloads of folders already downloaded. There is no duplication of the emails in the displayed folders. If I click on the 'get messages' button the downloading stops for a few seconds and then continues where it left off. Regards Martin
