For some reason Thunderbird has defaulted to printing out in Landscape which I have to change on every occasion I need to print . How do I change it back to Portrait permanently?

Here I have in Thunderbird's main menu, File|Page Setup, or in the Application Menu, Print|Page Setup. Either one allows you to set the default orientation.

Is your experience that these change back to the non-preferred setting?
