Chosen solution

You do not log into Thunderbird.

When you sent or receive mail your providers server will ask for a password. If long, long ago you told Thunderbird to remember your password it has been providing it when the server asks for it.

Now something has changed. More than likely gmail and their Less Secure Apps rubbish has caught up with you.

Go to the gmail site and log into your account there. Find the option to Allow Less Secure Apps and check the box to make this active.
