when I type in the search bar now, instead of a drop down list, a partial list opens in a new window top left. If this worked correctly it seems like it would be a pain, but as most of my search engines have vanished it's unusable up to date FF windows 10 screenshot

First - Does that happen when the browser window is wider? I suspect that "something is telling" Firefox that there isn't enough room to display the Search drop-down in its normal location.

2nd - Does that happen when the Downloads button isn't sitting between the Location Bar and the Search Bar?

3rd - It might help if you get rid of the flexible spaces on the Navigation toolbar. One to the left of the Location Bar and the other to the right of the Search Bar.

Plus the combination of 2nd & 3rd is looking for disaster, IMO.

Um, well the problem has gone away after a reboot, so I've wasted your time, sorry In turn, no the problem first arose with the screen maximised 1600px wide I haven't moved the downloads button. I never new it was in a strange place I have now got rid of the spaces, no idea when or how they got there, but it was fixed before I did that Thanks again

If it does happen again it maybe one of your Extensions : SAFE MODE

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Close and restart Firefox after modifying the setting to make the change effective.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.
