I make account settings changes, click OK but the window doesn't close - have to use cancel to get it to close. The changes seem to take place, though, but when I close Thunderbird and restart it the old settings are back!!! I've tried changing the account name, as suggested elsewhere, to no effect. I have also uninstalled Thunderbird, but the problem returns on re-installation, so presumably something in one or more of the files that are not removed during an uninstall?

find prefs.js file in your Thunderbird profile https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data

make certain the file is not read-only

Many thanks. Deleted the 1850 prefs-nnnn.js 0kB size files and made the remaining original readable - seems to be working OK now :)

You might want to look at creating an exception in your anti virus product for your Thunderbird profile. This, I would guess, is an issue that arose through contention between Thunderbird and something else ( I assume anti virus) for access to that file. It may be causing other issues, including slowness.

Got rid of all the 0 byte sized Prefs files (over 1800 of them) and made the original readable: problem sorted. Thanks Wayne :)
