why does about:home keep showing up in the address entry bar?
when I return from websites and going to the browser home page I frequently have about:home being filled into the address bar. How do I get this to stop and just leave behind the default prompt to 'search or enter address'?

You need a Home Page. So can leave the area blank and tell it to use blank or you replace about:home with about:blank. if you just want a blank page to come up.
Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.
That does not solve the problem. My home page is Mozilla Start page. But I keep getting about:home in the address bar. I want it to just put up the default of search or enter address.
about:home is the address of Mozilla Start page.
Follow the Support Document to change it to something else if you do not like it.
As for support for version 56 there is none as it is outdated and insecure. Reinstall it if you feel it is a glitch, do a refresh or update.
The Firefox 56 version you use is rather old and is no longer supported. I can't remember how it behaves with respect to about:home and about:newtab. Current Firefox releases use the same Firefox Home page (Activity Stream) for both these URLs and leave the location/address bar empty. It is possible that Firefox 56 behaves differently and still shows the URL in the location bar.
The System Details list shows you run an older Firefox version that is no longer supported with security updates.
Please update to the current Firefox 61.0.1 release.
I have the addon Classic Theme Restorer installed and I finally found a fix using that. As for updating to Firefox 60 - not a chance without being able to keep my legacy addons or a Quantum equivalent.
