Why are two emails going to my sent folder every time I send an email to someone? This is happening with every email sent through the program.
I need one copy to go to my sent folder, so I don't want to uncheck that box about sending a copy of the message to my sent folder. Does anyone here know how I can stop the duplicate messages? This is happening with all my sent messages, no matter the ISP. Thank you!

Thank you once again! Just to clarify, I already have that box selected and I have them going to my sent folder. I need one copy of each email sent. Are you telling me to uncheck that box? If I do, will I still have a copy of the messages sent in my sent file?
You need to deselect that and have no copy from Thunderbird. both hotmail and google make a copy as the mail passes through their server, hence you getting two currently. As you can not turn the provides copy off. Neither offer an opt out. You have to turn off Thunderbird copy.
As for gmail...it's privacy concerns with Google that I have. I will look into the German option you speak of. I'm not a fan of all this metadata collection going on.

Are you sending the message through hotmail or gmail servers? (If not what mail providers?
Is the account IMAP?
No, I'm using Outlook. I just switched over from gmail for privacy concerns. I have no idea if the account is IMAP. Forgive my ignorance but I'm not extremely computer savvy. Thank you!
hotmail, outlook, live, msn it has had a lot of re-badging over the years. So it is Yes, not no.
Right click the account in thefolder pane in Thunderbird and select settings in the menu that opens. Select copies and folder for the account in the account settings and turn of Thunderbird keeping a copy/ making a copy of the sent email.
Problem solved.
BTW I am interested to hear why you would leave gmail over "privacy concerns". If I was looking for someone that would abuse my information for marketing purposes I would knock on Microsoft's door, but you have chosen them over Google. Personally for Privacy I choose GMX. They work under German law. German privacy regulation and laws are probably the best in the world. They certainly exceed those of Australia, we apparently have non were digital information is concerned.
