I am running Thunderbird 52.8.0 (64-bit) on Ubuntu bionic running on a fast Lenovo T450s with a SSD disk, but even so anytime I click on a unified folder either it freezes for a long time (safe mode) or reports a script is problem and and ask for stopping it.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Try the advice about deleting the smartmailboxes folder and the virtualfolders.dat file given in the paragraph beginning "If Unified folders is not working correctly...":
