How can I ENABLE the Compact Now message?
Contrary to most questions on this forum :-) I wonder how to ENABLE the Compact Now message? I have ticked the box ‘do not ask me again’ and now the message does not show up anymore. I figured out I actually like that message to remind me to compact every now and then.
Chosen solution
The Config. editor preference is mail.purge.ask. The default is true. Would help if it was named mail.compact.ask.

The prompt to compact should appear if you check the box 'Compact all folders when...' in Tools/Options/Advanced/Network & Disk Space/Disk Space.
Actually the user disabled the user prompt, which is a different and independent setting from what is available in Options.
The prompt can be forced to return, but you really don't need it. When you have automatic compact enabled in options and the prompt is disabled, then Thunderbird is still doing automatic compacts.

I changed mail.purge.ask to true in the config. editor. Seems the logical solution, but the compact now message has not shown up yet. I have unchecked set the Compact all folders when save over xx. Why is the message not appearing yet?
If you uncheck the box, compacting will be disabled and you'll not be prompted, no matter the value of mail.purge.ask. With the box checked, and mail.purge.ask set to true, you will be prompted to compact when the threshold is met, e.g. 20 MB.
Great, I lowered the Mb and the message came up! Thanks.
If you are on laptop and battery, a lower value will compact more often and decrease your battery life
