Can't get email with SSL activated
I stopped receiving email though Thunderbird on January 22. I was able to send but not receive. Recently I started to investigate the problem and found that when I turn off the SSL portion and set the server to use no connection security it receives. I use a webmail from my website which is hosted with godaddy and I am using cpanel. Below is the troubleshooting info.

Your problem is SSL from godaddy is for a server that is not your own. They cut costs by telling you to accept the server error and add it to your certificate store. instead of asking you to pay for one for your mail server. It is a half baked solution based on price points, not security.
Now, normally you get a popup window complaining about the certificate being wrong and offering to accept the bad certificate. Clicking NO drops the connection as there is no certificate. Clicking yes adds the certificate, but places the onus on you that your doing the right thing.
Sometime when you have an anti virus program in that mix, it barfs on the certificate and you never get to see anything at all, except maybe some we saved you from imminent hacking popups.
So turn off and email scanning (it is largely a waste of time and precious resources) and see if things improve. If not restart Thunderbird in safe mode (with add-ons disabled from the help menu) and try and get your mail.
OK, I figured it was something to do with that. The only AV I am using is the stock win 10 defender. I have looked and cannot find anywhere to add an exception or shut off email scanning. Do you know of any way?
Quote: The Windows Defender Antivirus engine makes note of any file changes (file writes, such as moves, copies, or modifications) and general program activity (programs that are opened or running and that cause other programs to run)
To exclude a scan on eg: Thunderbird profile name folder.
In Windows 10 using 'Defender': It would seem there is no specific email scanning section as in previous versions, but there is real-time scanning which scans all incoming files to your computer. So the incoming emails come under that umberella.
Quote: Always-on protection scans emails as they arrive and as they are manipulated, just like normal files in the operating system.
