my tags are disappearing--is this because my IMAP account does not allow tags or categories

Our email is hosted in an IMAP account. I downloaded and installed Thunderbird onto my PC, accessed my email, and started creating tags. The individual Thunderbird tags don't hold; they last for awhile (a few hours maybe) and then they disappear. Our email UI online is roundcube (the only other option is Horde) and roundcube doesn't seem to have tags or categories enabled. So I'm thinking that this is why my tags are not holding in Thunrderbird on my PC. Is this the case? Ultimately, I want the tags to filter down to the other users of our email address on their own PCs. I'm figuring this may not work either.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Tags#IMAP Thunderbird tries to store tags on the server using IMAP keywords. If the IMAP server doesn't support that it will store lags locally in the .msf file for the folder. That means that another PC can not see the labels.

So maybe there is a way to get tags onto roundcube via a plugin.

I've located some info which may work for you. I do not use Roundcube, so cannot offer advise on this. But it may be worth looking into...helpful links below.

See if 'Thunderbird Labels Plugin for Roundcube Webmail' works for you.

Hi and thank you for trying to help. I don't have roundcube installed on my machine. It's just one of a choice of two UIs for our webmail. So I don't think I can install the plugins? I'm going to try switching to Horde to see if Horde might have tags/categories as standard.

I've just realised you are talking about adding these lines to the source code...not something I've done before, but willing to give it a go.
