Hi there For the past month or more Thunderbird consistently times out on me when trying to connect through my paid for PureVPN. Before that it sometimes connected and sometimes didn't (usually the latter)... Connection is instant when I disconnect the VPN . Gmail and Yahoo work perfectly with other email addresses that I have. Is there a Thunderbird setting I must change? Thanks for any help you can give me here - my wife (an amateur, self trained, but very expert computer user) also has the same problem with her Thunderbird email address (but then she set up both our accounts!!) Chosen solution

The only info I can find on their site suggests you have to change the outgoing smtp port to 465, with SSL/TLS security, or 587, with STARTTLS security. That will only work if the mail provider supports those settings, and if it in fact supports authentication through the VPN. Timeouts in non-VPN setups are often caused by antivirus programs scanning email or SSL connections, so that is another factor to consider.

I am using Hotspot Shield. I find initially it took several attempts to sign in. Now it has become impossible with the VPN turned on. I can only log on with it off. I have attempted to reset the ports as noted but it seems to make no difference. (The send one was already set correctly; the receive was 995 (default). With port 995 chosen, I get a solid green bar below, about a 60-90 sec delay, then a message that the password was not sent and return was +. If I change the port to 465 I only get the "server was reset" message.
