Tbird says its up-to-date but keeps asking me to update?
I use Windows 10 Pro and Tbird ver. 68.1.0 (64-bit). Help> About Tbird says I'm up to date yet every morning I get a small window that asks me if I would like to update Tbird. Why is this if I'm up-to-date? Second, I tried the update and the update opened as a new install w/o incorporating anything such as my existing sent messages, trash, contacts and most importantly my local folders. How best to handle this if in fact it really is a update?
Thanks.

Download the full installer from https://www.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/all/ and run it. This will update your existing installation to the latest release version.

If you are seeing inconsistent update notices, see this post:

The full installer provided by christ1 worked nicely and updated my Tbird from 68.1.0 to 68.1.1. I am not expecting to get a request to update when I turn on the computer tomorrow.
The link provided by sfhowes did not open so I was unable to read the article. Error message said took too much time. Its ok because now the issue is solved.
Thanks to both!!
Still getting update pop up and I am up to date with 68.1.1

Did you try the approach mentioned above?
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Updates_reported_when_running_newest_version
To my surprise this morning I got the same pop-up message telling me an update is available even though yesterday I updated to 68.1.1. I am now able to read the article suggested by sfhowes but, since the article applied to Foxfire, I wasn't clear on what specific Tbird files needed to be deleted and if there were any "side effects" to deleting them.
Thanks for supplying this additional information.
I repeat from my earlier post:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Updates_reported_when_running_newest_version
The updates folder is in C:\Users\<windowsuser>\AppData\Local\Thunderbird
Note that the Local folder is different from the Roaming folder where TB stores the profile folder.
The article refers to Firefox, but applies to TB as well. Instead of deleting the files or folder, move them to another location. The 2nd suggestion in the article is to download and run the full installer for TB.
This would help and the last blue line from sfhowes is the same as https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/
Modified
I received another request to do an update this morning. Using the suggestion by sfhowes I checked the following location: c:\users\"me"\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Updates and found the Updates folder to be empty. Not sure whether it makes a difference or not but I have set hidden files to be visible. Since I can't delete or move files that are not there I can't follow through on this suggestion.
Anything else to try?
Thanks.
Same problem. Thunderbird ask every day for update. My current version is : 68.1.2 (32 bits)
I already tried to reinstall from that link : https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/
The folder "c:\users\"me"\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Updates" is empty.
I hope I can solve the problem without having to uninstall everything and reconfigure.
I just want to confirm that I am still getting a pop-up window on a daily basis which is telling me to do an update. Also, confirming that the Tbird updates folder is empty. Still looking for a fix for this problem.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I now believe the advice provided above about deleting the Updates folder is obsolete - which explains why some users find the folder to be empty.
Instead, current versions store this information in
C:\ProgramData\Mozilla\updates
It contains folders named, e.g. F71A7C8BDDD23FE7, which contain an updates subfolder and update-config.json and updates.xml. Note that there may also be folders named, e.g. E7CF176E110C211B, which contains the same data for Firefox. If you open updates.xml in a text editor, you will see something like:
<updates xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2005/app-update"><update xmlns="http://www.mozilla.org/2005/app-update" appVersion="68.1.2" buildID="20191008153335" channel="release" detailsURL="https://live.thunderbird.net/thunderbird/releasenotes?locale=en-US&version=68.1.2&channel=release" displayVersion="68.1.2" installDate="1570763021584" isCompleteUpdate="true" name="Thunderbird 68.1.2" </p>
which indicates the update info for TB 68.1.2. So, I suggest you delete, or better, move the updates subfolder and the two files, update-config.json and updates.xml, to a backup location (while TB is closed), and then see if the spurious update notifications disappear.
Thanks for this additional information. I moved the updates subfolder and the two files listed above to a temp location. Will see what happens tomorrow and then will advise on the result.
Thanks sfhowes ! I tried that too. No update message today. It seems to work.
Modified
I made a backup, and deleated original 2 file and dir. Hopefully this does it.
Sorry to report that even though I moved the updates subfolder and the two files listed above to a temp location I'm still getting the update message once per day. It occurred yesterday and then again today. Anything else to try?
Thanks.

The only other thing I can suggest is to follow the advice at the top of this thread: uninstall TB from Windows Settings, delete the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folder for TB, for 64-bit or 32-bit, delete the updates folder and the two files, restart the computer, run the full installer, preferably 32-bit, restart the computer.

I tried that too. It works for many days, but the update message came back today. I hope to find a solution without uninstalling and reconfiguring everything.

Does it mean to recreate all the profile configuration or can I reload the old profile after reinstallation ?

TB 68.2 was released yesterday for autoupdate from earlier versions of 68 and also TB 60, so the notification you received is a valid one.
