Pop mail accounts Account Settings > Server Settings Under Message Storage click on 'Advanced...' button

The instructions at link say to use it and it is there in my POP mail account. So there is nothing wrong with the instructions.

Using Windows 10 OS Tested in TB win32 version 68.2.1 updated to version 68.2.2 and it's still there.

What OS are you using? What version of Thunderbird? Please post an image showing your particular view of the problem.

There is no Advanced button under Message Storage.

Using Win7 and 68.22 downloaded yesterday Please see screenshot.

No it is under server settings. But there is an advanced button and only one in the image you posted.

I assume on a mac where those screen shots were taken is it different. Few other that Chris ilia use a mac, but the difference in alignment is perhaps 10 mm in the vertical.

The correct approach when you notice a document is not correct or out of date it to click the discussion entry in the editing tools beside the article and make a note. In this case that would be 'https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/unify-your-pop-email-accounts-global-inbox/discuss

Or you might actually click the edit entry and update the article with the correct information if you are aware of it.

OK I can see why you are confused.

The Help Information at the link is specifically talking about POP mail accounts. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/unify-your-pop-email-accounts-global-inbox

It discusses creating a Global Inbox.

Pop mail accounts Account Settings > Server Settings Under Message Storage click on 'Advanced...' button

The instructions at link say to use it and it is there in my POP mail account. There is nothing wrong with the instructions.

However, your supplied image is for an IMAP mail account. IMAP accounts cannot create 'Global Inbox' for Message Storage, so that option is not available. The link you were looking at for POP mail accounts has nothing to do with IMAP accounts. In IMAP accounts: Account Settings > Server Settings Under 'Server Settings' There is an 'Advanced...' button and this shows the 'Advanced Account Settings' for imap mail accounts.

Summary: There is nothing wrong with your 'Server Settings' because they are correct for an IMAP account. There is nothing wrong with the instructions at the link because they are correct for a POP mail account.

Hope this clarifies your query.

Who uses POP? Its like 10 years deceased. I can't comprehend why they would even have this option. Are some people still on dialup? Slow satellite? I'm perplexed. I'm pretty sure I had this working before a couple years ago. I sure wasn't using POP then. If you have a lot of accounts and get the occasional email in them once in a while, scanning down to open up one account to read one message? What century is Mozilla in? What am I missing here? Surely there is an extension/add-on to correct this madness. Just when I thought I'd found a great email program I find out there is no audio notifications for individual accounts and now this. It seems like there is little central management at Mozilla. Rather a bunch of groups, working on their own, making bizarre decisions, rarely checked by upper management to make sure they stay in the world of the sane. The premise of a non-profit for a browser and email is so very sound but maybe they just can't draw upon very good talent if they don't pay as much as the private sector.

I use pop, daily. Just because you do not is not at all relevant. That you do not have a use case for POP is also not all that relevant. Thunderbird is a full features application that is very customizable, including offering support for NNTP newsgroups which you may have never head of. That does not detract from the fact there are those that using almost exclusively for that.

To be clear, I have no use for IMAP on most of my mail accounts as they are not synchronized across devices. Where I have a need for that I use it.

I can't comprehend why they would even have this option. Are some people still on dialup?

Yes they are. Fairly common in the USA I understand if you outside a city. there are still almost a million of them. Just because you have it good, not everyone is doing as well.

Slow satellite?

Again Yes. Talk to any Australian on their "National Broad Band Network Satellite" service. Or those with unreliable 3 and 4g

There are only about 65 countries in the world with average internet speeds that could be considered "broadband" In much of Africa phone data is the only internet, those folks are also bandwidth conscious as many pay per mb.

I'm perplexed. I'm pretty sure I had this working before a couple years ago. I sure wasn't using POP then.

I would guess you were using unified folders. That is the global inbox for those constrained with IMAP accounts. View menu > folders > unified

If you are going to denegrate someone, I suggest you leave Mozilla out of it. They do not make Thunderbird and have not since 2012. You might be on a support web site that says Mozilla, but that is the extent of their involvement, they let us use their support site.

I think until you understand how to use the program and understand the governance of this open source product you have best keep your opinions to yourself. Your comments do not reflect well on you. Thunderbird is a very small community project that is just coming out of 5 years of looking like it might fold because no one knew we were not part of Mozilla, so donations were scarce and employees were non existent.

BTW I use Pop on some accounts and Imap on other. Speed in my is irrelevant, I have other reasons. Pop is very much alive and kicking.

Egads....looks like I hit a nerve. Sorry. Newsgroups: I thought nobody used them anymore. I loved newsgroups. Great discussions, all well organized and searchable. So much better than website attempts. There used to be 20,000+ but last time I checked several years ago it seemed that nobody was using the ones I used to frequent. What subjects still use them besides perhaps stuff directly computer software related? And what about IRC? People still using that? I always thought Usenet was the best part of the internet with the smartest people. The web seemed so dumbed down! Now sites like Yahoo Answers and Quora have taken up the reins for the lazy and ill informed! If you want good answers you definitely have to ask them in very subject specific groups.

> In much of Africa phone data is the only internet, those folks are also bandwidth conscious as many pay per mb.

Interesting you mentioned this today. Space-X just launched a bunch of satellites to offer faster satellite internet access worldwide but starting in North America. They hope to have 30,000 eventually. Incredible as presently there are only about 2000 in total. Astronomers are worried all that stuff up there will interfere with their long exposure photography and other observations.

> I would guess you were using unified folders.

Oh wow....I think you nailed it. Thank you so much. That really sounds like what I had done before. Now I'm back on track!

> If you are going to denegrate someone.....

Sir, your skin is very thin. Don't take offence. And don't take criticism that you may be involved in personally! I was merely making an observation that seemed odd to me. I've spent hours with this program and sometimes my patience gets a little thin as well. We all think differently and its very frustrating when programmers ignore convention for no apparent benefit as Firefox and Thunderbird seem to frequently do. But on the other hand, having a non-profit produce browser and email programs is incredibly important as Google proceeds to take over the online world. So older people that have seen what has happened to the internet over the past few decades, like myself, get very worried when one company has so much power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, as they say.

Good that you mentioned the separation of Thunderbird and Mozilla. Of course you could mention that on the front page of this forum.....we aren't telepathic unfortunately. I bet almost nobody realizes that.

You mention no employees. Are you saying that Thunderbird was created by just volunteers or people paid by donations? If so that is incredible. I can't imagine the thousands of work hours that went into that.

I must thank you for some great tips and information. The most informative reply I've had in a long time.

If your previous comment had mentioned "unified folders" I think it would have. We were getting close!

So why do you use POP for some accounts? Is it because on some accounts you don't want messages to come in all the time and with IMAP there is less control for that?
