White Arrow on green background is up next to the Calendar and Task Icon
Can anyone tell me what it is or what it does?

Do you have Kaspersky? It's known to indicate that updates are available even when TB is up to date.

I haven't seen that myself, but TB has added some new update notifications. If you click the 3-bar icon on the right of your picture, Help/About TB, does it indicate an update is available?
No, Thunderbird is completely up to date
Now the arrow has disappeared. I think you might have nailed it . . . there must have been an update available. I have an app that does the updates automatically so I didn't notice.

Yep Looks like it is telling us that an update is available. Installed the available update, and hte arrow went away.
