I installed Thunderbird 68.4.2 a few days ago and today (11 Feb 2020) apt tells me that a new version, 68.5.0, is available at "http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/ppa/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages". But I can find no release notes at all about this version on the thunderbird.net site. Given all the tedious problems of ensuring compatibility with addons, I can't see upgrading Thunderbird blind.

So, what's the story? Is there a mistake in the repository? Are the release notes tardy in being published?

Chosen solution

If you look through the download pages on Thunderbird.net you will notice there is no 68.5 available for download.

The FTP site also does not appear to have a 68.5 http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/

There is however a 68.5 candidate build, so I think your repository have jumped the gun a little. Perhaps you need to address that with them.

That might be, but the repository in question is: http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/ppa/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

$ apt-cache policy thunderbird thunderbird:

 Installed: 1:68.4.2+build2-0ubuntu0.16.04.1~mt1
 Candidate: 1:68.5.0+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1~mt1
 Version table:
    1:68.5.0+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1~mt1 500

Thanks for that. Might I suggest that they also appear here https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/releases/ and that a page such as https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/releases/68.5.0/releasenotes/ be created?

The 68.5 version has just become available from Help/About TB as I write, so I expect the website will be updated within 24 hours.

You repository built and released the version ahead of time. Simple as that.

If you have issues direct them to the repository not here. Once 68.5 was released the web site is updated, until it is released there are no release notes, unless you know where to dig for them. That s as it should be.
