I see that other Thunderbird users are experiencing similar problems, but there has been no response to the post since Oct of last year. So I am asking again, if there is a fix for the program being unable to log in to my earthlink account. The login credentials for my earthlink account have not changed and I am able to login to the webmail version.

Chosen solution

I think your incoming settings are consistent with Earthlink's advice, but they also state that imap.earthlink.net on port 143, security = STARTTLS, authentication = Encrypted password, is allowed. For the outgoing smtpauth.earthlink.net on port 587, it seems to work with security = none and authentication = password, transmitted insecurely, or security = STARTTLS and authentication = normal password.

They may now require secure connections, without having warned users who previously had non-secure settings.

What is your security/AV program, and is it set to scan email folders? The program may have updated recently and become incompatible with TB.

What are your server settings, incoming and outgoing? See this topic:

I don't exactly understand the posts, so here are a couple of screenshots related to the problem. Understand that until 3 days ago for the last couple of years, the program worked well and I have changed nothing lately.

I temporarily stopped AVG from scanning emails, and I was able to download earthlink messages today. Guess I'll just have to juggle the two. Thanks for the help.
