I have a Logitech mouse. If I set the middle button to the task auto-scroll the auto-scroll function stops. If I set the middle button to the function middle button the auto-scroll works. The problem is in order for Adobe to auto-scroll I need to set the middle button task to auto-scroll. Firefox will auto-scroll no matter what the setting is. Will auto-scroll work if I select auto-scroll and assign it to the middle button?

Thunderbird settings regarding 'auto scroll' are here:

  • Menu app icon > Options > Options > Advanced > 'General' tab

you can choose 'Use autoscrolling' or 'Use smooth scrolling' or neither.

I suggest you check what settings you have in Thunderbird, select 'Use autoscrolling', restart Thunderbird to ensure settings are being used and see if it works with the Logitech middle button set to auto scroll.

I went to Tools/Options and found the setting I think you are referring to. It was already set to Use Autoscrolling. I have attached an image.

I have also attached an image of my Logitech mouse. With the settings as shown auto-scrolling works, but it will not work for Adobe. If I change the setting to AutoScroll Thunderbird will not work, but Adobe does.

If I uncheck the Thunderbird option Use Autoscrolling then auto-scrolling will not work for Thunderbird no matter what I do.

Firefox will auto-scroll regardless of the Logitech setting. Firefox will not auto-scroll if I uncheck Use Autoscrolling in Tools/Options.

What happens if you set mouse middle wheel to middle button and then in Adobe initiate the auto scroll function using 'View' > 'Page display' > Automatically scroll (ctrl+shift+H) ?

In Adobe: You can also put an icon for this onto the toobar via right click on toolbar > Show page display tools > select 'Enable scrolling'.

If that works then you will have auto scolling on both.

Adobe Automatically scroll will set the page so that it continuously scrolls. The strange thing is I can depress the center button on my mouse and it stops, but the minute I release it the page starts scrolling again. Since nothing is assigned to the middle button you

I guess I was surprised that Thunderbird will not scroll when you set the mouse option.

With Adobe and the scroll option not set it will scroll as long as you hold down the middle mouse button. The icon is a circle with four arrows. When you set the mouse option the icon changes to a double headed arrow, which is what you get with Thunderbird when the option is not set and Firefox no matter how the option is set.

Should Thunderbird scroll when the option is set?

I just realized something. I uploaded an image of the Logitech Advanced settings. Here you can select a button and assign it to an application for a specific function. You will see four applications, one of which is Thunderbird. The first three buttons can not be assigned to any of the programs listed, but auto-scroll works on all but Thunderbird.

There are a lot of options for the middle button in the Logitech application. I only selected one of them which was zoom. That function will work in Thunderbird. When you select the option the button name changes from middle button to zoom.

If you select Autoscroll the name changes to Autoscroll and you are presented with a setting as to how fast to scroll.

Is it a function of the OS to present Autoscroll to the application?

I decided to connect the mouse that came with the PC. The same thing occurs with the PC mouse. The only problem with this is I don't have the Logitech software I can use to change the function.

I guess Adobe did not want you to be able to easily scroll a document.

My question is why does Thunderbird stop scrolling when I select Autoscrolling in the Logitech software? Firefox does not stop.

This means Logitect have not specifically configured their software to function with Thunderbird. It is possible there is a conflict in the registry settings.

I have no problems using Adobe's own toolbar to scroll. I select the option on toolbar, depress middle button over the document and it scrolls until I release middle button, restarts scroll when I depress again. It does not require you to set anything special for the mouse and that is the whole point, you do not need to set anything in Logitect. Not all mice have additional options, mine does not, but middle wheel works as a scroll in anything.

RE: Difference between Thunderbird and Firefox

Have you checked to see if there is anything different in the 'about:config' settings using search on 'mousewheel' ? There are many commonly used parts in the programs as they were once both developed by 'Mozilla'. You should find them virtually identical. I think in mine there is only one preference that is not in Thunderbird.

How to access 'about:config' in Thunderbird:

  • Menu app icon > Options > Options >Advanced > 'General' tab
  • click on 'Config Editor' button
  • Accept the risk.
  • In search type 'mousewheel'.

How to access 'about:config' in Firefox:

  • Open a new tab
  • In address bar type: about:config
  • Accept the risk.
  • In search type 'mousewheel'.

I only found one different.

Firefox has mousewheel.ignore_cursor_position_in_lparam false, Thunderbird does not have this setting.

The problem is I don't know what the settings mean.

Do you think Thunderbird is supposed to work like Firefox?

My wife has a laptop with a Logitech mouse. It uses the same Logitech software. I tried it on hers' and it works the same.

I know in the past I have had a problem with Thunderbird applying an update, and we have had several. The solution is to remove and reinstall Thunderbird. If you think there is a problem with Thunderbird should I reinstall? If so can you tell me how to get my configuration back?

Is there anyone you can talk with to see if Thunderbird is working as designed?

I just discovered something. If I receive an email I can click the mouse wheel and move the mouse to scroll. If I reply to that same email I can not click the mouse wheel and scroll. Why would this make any difference?
