Why is Thunderbird deleting my messages, even when I don't want them deleted?

When I download my messages in Thunderbird, I read them and intentionally delete the ones that I don't want to save. However, after I close the program and later return to it, all of my messages are deleted. I have not figured out in the "settings" menu how to prevent this. HELP!

First let's check if you've set Tbird to display unread emails only. Press the Alt key to unhide the menu bar if it is hidden, then go to View > Threads > All

Next, go to Tools > Account Settings > Synchronisation & Storage > Disk Space for the affected account. Check and make sure the option Don't Delete any messages is selected.

Finally, switch to the Server Settings > Message Storage and make sure the option Clean up Inbox on Exit is unchecked.

What type is the affected account, POP or IMAP?
