I had an email account established on Thunderbird that I suddenly lost. It says it cannot verify the password, but I know the password is correct because it works online at the yahoo.com site. I've tried changing the password, removing and re-instating the account, but nothing works. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Yahoo have changed how they deal with passwords. So you have to probably need to change the Authentication Method. Please read info at the following link. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-yahoo#w_important-changes-to-authentication-method-notice

I suspect this is due to the provider having changed their password policies to use OAuth2 and you have a saved plain text password. I think I saw this on a client's machine recently. You need to go to Tools/Options/Security/Saved Passwords (now needs your Windows password to get into), find both the IMAP and the SMTP passwords for the account that you are having problems with and delete both entries. Exit out of that and check for mail again. It should ask you afresh for the password and this time it will go through the OAuth2 process, alternatively you may need to change the Authentication Method in the account properties from Normal Password to OAuth2 (at the bottom of the list.
