I would like to move the "message" pane to be under the "message list" pane, with the "folder" pane to the left and spanning the entire height.

Right now they're all besides eachother. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-change-thunderbird-layout <- this faulty article says to go to "layout" in "preferences", but no such section exists.

Select View/Layout/Vertical View on the Menu Bar (press Alt or F10 if it's hidden), or click the 3-bar menu icon, Customize, Layout.
