Search bar auto fill issue

more options

Whenever I attempt to go to gmail Firefox will autocomplete a broken link that doesn't take me anywhere. I have deleted it from my history and it will not leave the search bar auto fill thing no matter what I do. It's driving me up the wall because it has been killing my workflow. I know it's a really minor issue but I've been dealing with it for months and my frustration with it has also been compounding for months. I've googled it many times and it feels like I've tried everything and I just can't fix it. Please somebody tell me how to fix this.

Hi, if you type ma does Firefox show mail.google.com in the address bar as a suggestion?

Normally a one-word entry like gmail would show "Search" in that bar instead of "Visit" -- is that what you see for other queries? If search is disabled, and that isn't intentional, let me know and we can provide steps to address that issue first.

If you are expecting a Search and instead get a Visit, check for an exception as follows:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future. Since we are looking to delete a customization, if it exists, I feel comfortable mentioning it.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste gmail and pause while the list is filtered

Does Firefox show any preferences similar to:

browser.fixup.domainwhitelist.gmail

(3) Remove any unwanted whitelist entries by clicking the trash can at the right end of the row

Does that work?

Those entries are created by the "lookup after search" feature which can be deceived by ISPs that want to show you some kind of help page of paid links for everything. You can turn off this feature in about:config as well:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.urlbar.dnsResolveSingleWordsAfterSearch and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to display an editing field, and change the value to 0 then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change.
