I have the what I take to be the latest version of Thunderbird 91.6.1 as I write (27Feb2022) but I can't get what appears to be the built-in remove duplicate function to work. When I select a folder than I know contains duplicates, right click and click on the Remove Duplicates function, i just get a message saying (erroneously) that there are no duplicates in that folder. I know that there are add-ons for this function, but none of them say that they work with recent versions and I'm afraid to download and try them.

Addons generally specify what versions they work with and TB will not activate addons that are not specified to work with the version in use.

There is no such inbuilt function in Thunderbird 91.6.1
