March 9, the progress of download status now comes on after each download, not when I simply ask to see the status. this is annoying as it continues to list all downloads during the session. I have to hit the icon to not see the status after each pop-up, this was never a problem until this morning.

Chosen solution

In Firefox 97 and 98+ there have been changes to the download panel.

You can set this pref to false on the about:config page to prevent opening the download panel on each download.

  • browser.download.alwaysOpenPanel = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

This is a UX regression fail. Maybe some product manager proposed this automatic popup was an 'enhancement', but it's an annoyance. Please evaluate end-user workflow impacts of this additional click. At a minimum, put a toggle in Settings/General/Files and Applications/ Downloads.

There is a bug report about making this available via the user interface in the context menu of the download panel.

When introducing new features, please *do not* enable them by default!

The instructions at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=voting.html are outdated. There is no "(vote)" link that appears on the right of the "Importance" fields. Instead the "Vote" link is hidden in the collapsed "Details" section. Expand "Details" to find it.
