I cannot permanently get rid of threads. The latest thunderbird makes that the default. I would like all e-mails shown, by name or by date. The new find doesn't allow choice of sender or recipient or topic which was better. I am getting so irritated that I am considering, after many years of use, of ditching Thunderbird for something else.

Chosen solution

The default for threading can be set to unthreading. Full info is here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/message-threading-thunderbird

I do not understand the search problem, as those options are still there. Maybe I'm misunderstanding?
