On Thunderbird 115 64-bit, one of my subfolders under my local folders has changed its icon from folder to letter. Now I can't edit, move or do anything else with it. How do I change it back to the way it was before?

Please post an image showing the Folder Pane. When you say 'local folders' do you mean 'Local Folders' mail account ?

'Drafts' and 'Templates' both have icons that look like a letter, so it sounds like you may have a folder which has been set up to be the chosen folder for Drafts or Templates.

Check Account Settings

  • Account Settings
  • Select 'Copies & folders' for the account which has the folder with wrong 'letter' icon

Check the 'Drafts and Templates' sections. So for Drafts.... If pop:

  • Select: 'Drafts folder on: and choose mail account name/email address

If imap:

  • Select 'Other' and choose eg: 'Drafts on mail account name/email address

Below is the screenshot. Folder that is locked for any changes or reordering, and looks like a letter icon is the first under Imported Mail, named d'Aulaire NYRB. Do not understand how this happened or how to revert it to its former Folder (Sub-folder) status.

It's under Imported Mail -- NOT Local Folders.

Install this add-on to correct the properties:

According to the image you posted - 'Imported Mail' is in the 'Local Folders' mail account, so it is a locally saved file.

Follow 'sfhowes' advise in order to reset the 'flag' setting by removing the 'drafts' flag.

Some images below may assist when installing that 'Folderflags' addon. The first image should help if you actually downloaded the xpi file. The following 3 images may helps if you auto installed from a Thunderbird search and rest apply either method.

Unfortunately, my computer (Windows 11 Home) will not let me open the downloaded "folderflags-1.6.0-tb.xpi" file. When I try, it says: "This add-on cannot be opened because it has not been verified." How do I deal with that?

Also, I can't find the add-on manager or any of the other options in the graphic attached to the reply I received from Toad-Hall. Unfortunately, I'm an 85-year old man, not a youthful programming whiz.  :(

re :Unfortunately, my computer (Windows 11 Home) will not let me open the downloaded "folderflags-1.6.0-tb.xpi" file.

You do not open it. Thunderbird opens it but you have to get it into Thunderbird first. Image below as guide. In Thunderbird

  • Click on the 'menu app icon' - it has 3 horizontal lines - and is usually located top right

It will show you a drop down list

  • Click on 'Addons & Themes'

It will open in a new tab

Now you should have the same view as my first image which I'll post again. In the left pane select 'Extensions' top right you will see a gear cog wheel icon - click on it to see drop down menu select 'Install addon from file'

A window opens and you need to locate where you downloaded that file. In the image it shows I had downloaded it to the 'Downloads' folder. select the 'folderflags-1.6.0-tb.xpi' file to highlight and click on 'Open' button- as shown in image. It then gets installed into Thunderbird automatically.

Great! I got the addon installed and cleared all the flags, but it still didn't reset the mailbox properly. Still didn't alpabetize itself or reset the folder icon to what is should be. See image. What did I miss? I think my brain is going south! ;)

The screenshot is with all flags cleared in Imported Mail but the mailbox "d'Aulaire NYRB" still can't be alphabetized because it doesn't have the folder icon. Sorry about the dupes, attach two identical screenshots.
