Can I get Firefox to ask for the primary password only if it is needed?
I would like to further secure my passwords but don't want to have to enter the primary password every time I start the browser. I would like it to only prompt me if a password is needed. I can go days without needing a password to be entered and open and close Firefox every time I use it. It gets tedious. Thanks!

Are you using Sync as this is a possible reason to ask for the Primary Password when you start Firefox ?
Using Sync is a possible reason to ask for the Primary Password at startup. This is because the credentials to login to the Sync account are stored in the Password Manager and you need to enter the Primary Password to unlock the passwords and connect/login to the Sync account.
I am using sync and have been since before I set the primary password. I guess it makes sense. I wish there was a better way. The annoyance eventually forces me to remove the primary password and do without.
