The main KnowledgeBase article about making Firefox your default browser is here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How+to+make+Firefox+the+default+browser
There's also this KB article for when you are having a problem setting Firefox as the default browser: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Setting+Firefox+as+the+default+browser+does+not+work
Some programs that are installed on Windows operating systems are coded to open IE, and there's nothing the average user can do to change it.
You say that some websites are opening in IE; how are you opening those websites? It may not be a problem with the "default browser" setting. From a desktop shortcut? Or, from a bookmark in Firefox?
