New tab opening/closing policy

I noticed that tabs, when opened by a link (opened in a new tab), appear next to the tab with a site of that link's origin. So far I like it but I can imagine a situation where it could be annoying.

other thing is closing tabs. usually when closing a tab firefox switches to previously used tab - that is very good. but after closing a tab which was opened by a link from other tab, firefox switches to the next tab on the bar. I think that it has both good and bad sides.

So, to conclude. I think that users should be able to set these policies themselves. I realize that these are not very serious problems and people can live like this with no problem, but this stroke me quite fast after last upgrade.

Martin,

Sorry for missing the second half of your question originally. The add-ons Tabberwocky and Tab Mix Plus are the go to extensions for customizable tab behavior.

Specifically, Tabberwocky can probably do what you want:

+ Switch to last selected tab or tab on the left when closing a tab

You won't need both of them at the same time, if Tabberwocky doesn't do the trick, Tab Mix Plus probably will.

There is an about:config preference to revert to the previous behavior:

  • In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter .
  • The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! , to continue to the about:config page.
  • In the filter textbox, enter browser.tab.insertRelatedAfterCurrent , and double click the item that appears to toggle to false

See New tabs do not appear to the right of the last tab for a simple add-on to make this change and for more info.

Thx for the reply. I checked it out. indeed it is possible to set how the tabs are opened but actually I could live with both ways of it.

What I really would like is to manage the closing rules. When you open a link from bookmarks (in a new tab), the tab appears as a last tab on the bar and after you close it firefox sends you back to previously used tab - this is very good. Other thing is when you open links form a website: 1. when I open many links from one website, then yeah it is good that when I close one of these new tabs, firefox sends me just to the next tab. 2. when I open just one link in a new tab, usually after closing it I want to go back to the tab I came from and ff sends me to the next one.

Is it possible to manage this setting? I looked through browser.tab preferences in about:config and didn't find anything. is there any other add-on? I hope that somebody shares my dislikes about it, that I'm not the only 'nit-picker' here ;)

hmm...I just noticed another thing. When the link opens itself in a new tab, after closing it ff goes back to the previous tab but when I open the same link but using middle mouse button (so specifying that I want it to open in a new tab) then after closing it ff goes to the next tab.
