It seems that this started happening after the Firefox 3.6.8 update was installed (Fri, 7/23/10)...I'm unable to open any sites using Firefox, but have no problems with Internet Explorer. I checked my Windows Firewall settings and Mozilla Firefox is listed as an exception.

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

the Firefox 3.6.8 upgrade was installed.

Your Firewall does not recognize the new version of Firefox and is blocking it from connecting. Clear all instances of Firefox from your Firewall programs list. Let your Firewall re-detect the new version of Firefox and give Firefox the necessary permissions in your Firewall.
