I like to have alot of bookmarks on the bookmarls toolbar so I frequently organize them into folders. As an example I have a folder called email, I click it and I have a drop down with all my email account links.

The problem is when I create these bookmark folders on the bookmarks toolbar, they are not storing them in the bookmark.html folder but rather creating actual folders in the root (c:) directory.

I had to reinstall windows so my entire previous windows installation with my bookmarks are on a seperate partition. When I try to import the bookmarks it doesnt import these.

I am not sure if the only fix is to copy these folders to the root directory of my new windows installation - I am just surprised it is working like this.

Firefox doesn't store any files in the root of a drive. The bookmarks.html file hasn't been used for storing Firefox bookmarks since the Firefox 2 versions. Bookmarks are stored in the places.sqlite file in the Profile folder.

The folders did not mysteriously appear in my root folder. They matched the names and the url shortcuts inside matched the links I had placed in each of the folders by dragging them in on the ff toolbar.

Is it possible that they were created by the way I created folders in firefox, by right clicking on the personal toolbar and clicking new folder?

Firefox will never create folders for bookmarks the way IE does. All bookmarks are stored in one SQLite database file and not as separate files on disk.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
