Please note that you are 4 updates behind in Firefox. Several security issues have been fixed since your version (see: https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox36.html ). Consider updating to the current version; click Help > Check for Updates.
Open a link or bookmark in a new tab:
- Middle-click the link (middle-click = press the scroll wheel)
- Ctrl+left-click the link
- Right-click the link and choose "Open Link in New Tab"
- See: http://www.7is7.com/software/firefox/shortcuts.html
Some extensions have an option to automatically open links/bookmarks in new tabs:
- Tabberwocky (light-weight): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/14439/
- Tab Utilities (light-weight): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59961/
- Tab Mix Plus (extensive options): https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122/
