My location bar redirects me to baidu search when I type anything other than a url on it. How do I disable baidu?

I have just installed Firefox 3.6.12. When I type any word (for example, gmail) on the location bar, I expect firefox to send me to the gmail home page. However, it redirects me instead to the baidu search page. I definitely don't understand Chinese characters, so I definitely don't want baidu anywhere near my browser.
