At one point i uninstalled Firefox because of this problem but since re-installed, and problem is still appearing

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

The Mozilla ActiveX plugin is not compatible with Firefox 2 and 3 and you should remove it.
