I can open new tabs if I click on a link in a webpage that opens to a new tab. But I can't open blank tabs with the button or from the drop down menu.

Also, when I have 2 or more tabs or windows open, Firefox seems to struggle. All the navigation buttons disappear & so do buttons & graphics inside the web page. This just started happening recently.

I have Windows XP Home.

Try uninstalling the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and the current version of Firefox.
