It also says: "Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct" How can I do this?

You can find the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select "No Proxy"
See "Firefox connection settings":
Thanks. I followed your suggestion and selected No Proxy. That seems to have done the trick. Now I wonder what is the consequence of not using a proxy?
Using No Proxy works with Vista but not Windows XP. With XP Firefox 4 accessed the internet for a while but now onky gives proxy refusing message regardless of what proxy choice is made. How does one know what proxy server to use in the first place?
I am using Windows XP, Home Edition. I have been using the "no proxy" option for about two weeks now and it seems to work just fine. I'm now wondering if there are any security implications of using "no proxy". Does a proxy add a layer of security that isn't there with "no proxy"? Specifically, is it safe to enter passwords using the "no proxy" option?
In previous Firefox version the default was "No proxy". In current Firefox versions that has been changed to using the system proxy, but that doesn't seem to work very well on Windows XP and in that case it helps to revert that change and select no proxy.
I just want to put in my input.
I have Windows XP SP3, Home Edition, and have been using the 'System Proxy' setting ever since I used FF4 and have no problem whatsoever. Of course, it also depends on the configurations of your PC as well.
