When I have more than one window open (3 in this case), with multiple tabs on each, one window shows tabs without the "x" to close the tab... on all of the tabs. So in order to close a tab, I have to right click each time, and select "close tab" instead of simply clicking the "x". The other windows are fine and I can close tabs normally, but certain windows doesn't show the "x". I tried to just close that window and start over, which solves the problem at first, but if I close firefox and restore, I get the same problem again. Coincidentally for me, it's always the window that has twitter, so I don't know if twitter has something to do with it. To make things easier visually, I've uploaded a picture of the problem: http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9863/fftabfail.jpg

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

I have the same complaint . I have no more "close tab" or "File" so I can't go back to my previous page. I HATE THIS! Now I have to "Exit" and start all over again. This does not work! How do I get to my previous page! Fran fcoya@comcast.net

Restarting in Safemode does indeed seem to solve the problem and bring it back to normal, so I guess it's one of the add-ons that's causing this conflict. I don't have any themes/appearance running, so it has to be one of the add-ons. It's strange though, since I have the same add-ons running from firefox 3, which ran without any problems or glitches.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Thanks cor-el. It was too much effort to test each and every one of the many extensions I have... however I thought to myself, what is the most stupid, worthless, useless, badly designed, piece of turd extension that I have that ruins the internet and should die in a fire. The obvious response was "Adobe Flash" so I disabled it and the problem was immediately resolved.
