Is it possible to have Firefox 4 speed but retain the far superior menu and tab bar of Firefox 3?
I would very much like increased speed of operation but for my use the new orientation of the tab bar, favorite tabs and search window would be counterproductive.

It is very easy to do this. By default on Windows XP it will have the old style menu bar and the tab bar is not on top.
If you have Firefox 4 set up with the new UI, you can revert to the older appearance by right-clicking on a toolbar, then clicking on the "Menu Bar" entry to select it. To change the position of the tab bar, right-click on a toolbar and click on the "Tabs on Top" entry.

Thank you very much.
