A few months ago, there was an update for Firefox (I don't remember which one). I clicked install, and went through the entire process, but when it came time to click Firefox it wouldn't open. I tried downloading it again, but everytime it started to download it told me to close the current Firefox operation that was already running. I tried to un-install Firefox entirely so that I could re-install it, but I think I may have not un-installed all of it correctly (meaning I couldn't update OR use the old version that I had.) Today I tried to re-update, to see if that would work, but I have been having the same problem with it not opening.

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version.
  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

I just tried that, and it won't let me uninstall it either...when I try to uninstall, it says "Firefox must be closed in order to proceed with the uninstall, please close Firefox to continue." My computer thinks Firefox is always running for some reason, and it won't let me update OR uninstall now.

Try to rename the Firefox program folder.

If you're not allowed to do that then try to boot Windows in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key on the boot screen.
