How can I avoid creating a "parent.lock" file?

Each time this file is created (which is several times each day), Firefox 6.02 freezes, crashes, or continuously try to connect to a web site. Simply put- the program stops working. When I try to close Firefox - it takes 15 to 30 minutes. Task Manager will not close the program. To correct the problem I have to shutdown my XP laptop, restart it, locate the file in the Firefox Profile folder and delete it. So, what must be done to avoid creating a "parent.lock" file?

Firefox creates that parent.lock file to indicate that a Firefox instance is using that profile to prevent other Firefox processes from using that profile..
The creation of that file shouldn't be a problem.
