Message saying NS AppsShell not responding

When browsing with Firefox OK for a few pages/links then for no apparent reason it will stop responding and wont open any pages. When Firefox shutdown and try to restart a splash message appears saying Firefox is already running (even though it isnt) and to either shut it down or restart my machine. When I try to shutdown my computer a slash screen appears saying NS AppsShell not responding and I have to switch off manually. I think NS AppsShell is a Mozilla program/file as no problem with browsing with internet explorer

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Sorry cor-el but your suggestion makes no differance still same problem in safe mode with add ons disabled. Anything else you could sugest?

Thanks for trying to help but above links offer no resolution either. Have now disabled all add ons and plug ins but still the same problem.
