I just installed Firefox on my computer. I had Internet Explorer as the primary. I setup firefox as the primary browser. However, when I go to "import data from another browser", the area is grayed out and it won't let me import. What can I do to fix it?

Are you running Firefox in the Private Browsing mode when you are trying to "import"?

I wasn't. I ended up noticing a few other things that didn't look right. I uninstalled it and reinstalled everything and it works fine now. For some reason it didn't install correctly the first time.

I'm not running private browsing unless that is the default. I'm just starting out so it would be nice if the help feature responded to the question asked. Jim

Did you check those History settings?

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

You can also try to uninstall and reinstall Firefox.

You can find the latest Firefox release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

  • Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will also lose your personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer to make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
