For some reason my tabs no longer have the X (to quickly close the open tab) in upper left corner. What has happened; how to I recover that functionality.

You can close a tab with a middle-click on that tab.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
