Particularly with one website, Firefox tells me that the site uses a plug-in that only runs in 32-bit. It gives me the option to restart Firefox in 32-bit. But I don't have that problem in Safari. I have a feeling that it might involve both a plug-in that plays MP3s and a plug-in (possibly QuickTime) that plays videos because neither the imbedded sounds or a video that's on the site play. Any suggestions -- other than switching to Safari as my primary browser?

On a Mac, Firefox 4 versions and later are a 64 bit application (i386/x86_64 universal binary).
Not all plugins support 64 bit and if not then you need to start Firefox in 32 bit mode to use that plugin.

  1. Close Firefox
  2. Start the Finder and open the Applications folder
  3. Right click or control-click the Firefox.app icon
  4. Select "Get Info"
  5. Select or Deselect "Open in 32-bit mode"
  6. Close the "Firefox Info" window
  7. Restart Firefox

Thanks for your reply but I guess I didn't make my "question" clear. I do know that I can restart Firefox in 32-bit mode but that's what I'm trying to avoid. How can I determine what plugin is involved?

I've seen Silverlight mentioned as plugin that needs 32 bit.

Try to disable the plugins to see with which plugin you get the message that the plugin is disabled (don't know if that also happens in cases like this).
